2. Conditions of participation
2.a – EXCELLENT PHYSICAL CONDITION
The Ultra Cycling Tour de la Vanoise is aimed at cyclists with an excellent physical condition, as well as very good training, who can cover a minimum of 200 km per day or more depending on the format chosen.
The participant must be able to ride completely self-sufficiently over very long distances, both day and night.
The participant is fully aware of the extreme length of the route and its difficulty.
2.b – ACCEPTANCE OF THE EXTREME RISKS OF THE EVENTS
The participant is fully aware that the Ultra Cycling Tour de la Vanoise is an extremely dangerous sporting activity.
The participant is fully aware that he/she may be confronted with extreme and hostile climatic (rain, heat, cold, storms) and geological conditions, particularly in the mountains, and that for such an event the safety of the participant depends solely on his/her ability to adapt to the problems encountered or foreseeable.
The participant is fully aware that he/she must anticipate and adapt to any problems and inform him/herself of possible health risks (water and food).
The participant is fully aware that the role of the organiser is not to help or assist him/her in dealing with problems, even in the event of technical damage or physical or mental problems.
The participant thus accepts unreservedly and irrevocably – by virtue of his registration – all risks associated with the event including, but not limited to
- the risk of a traffic accident,
- the risk of injury in the event of a fall,
- the risk of muscular or articular injuries,
- the risk of trauma and fractures, particularly to the head,
- the risk of digestive problems and dehydration,
- the risk of illness
All of which may lead to total or partial, temporary or permanent disability or death. The participant thus agrees to participate in the race at his/her own risk.
By accepting all the risks of this particularly dangerous event, the Participant unreservedly and irrevocably accepts sole responsibility for any type of damage resulting from his/her participation in the event and of which he/she would be a victim, in particular, but not limited to
- physical injury,
- mental injury,
- moral damage,
- material damage,
- damage to image or reputation,
- professional damage,
- financial damage of any kind
- death.
The participant accepts, with full knowledge of the possible consequences, to release the organiser from any and all responsibility in tort and/or contract for any damage that he/she may suffer as a result of the event and its organisation.
The participant therefore waives all recourse against the organiser. The present article constitutes a substantial element of the participant’s acceptance to compete in the Ultra Cycling Tour de la Vanoise and that of the organiser to validate the registration of the said participant.
It is therefore essential to participate in the Ultra Cycling Tour de la Vanoise: To have acquired, prior to the race, a real capacity for personal autonomy, particularly in the mountains, allowing you to manage without outside help the problems caused by this type of event, and particularly
- Knowing how to deal with extreme climatic conditions that can be very difficult, even fatally dangerous, such as wind, heat, cold, fog, rain, landslides, etc., without outside help
- Know how to deal with physical and mental problems resulting from extreme fatigue, digestive problems, muscular or joint pain, injuries, etc., even if the participant is isolated from everything.
- To have acquired, prior to the race, a real capacity for personal autonomy in repairing any technical problem on a bicycle.
- Have acquired, prior to the race, a real capacity for personal autonomy to set up a bivouac on any type of terrain and to know how to provide themselves with water and food.
- To have already participated in similar events or endurance events over several days prior to the race
2.c MINIMUM AGE OF PARTICIPANTS
The Ultra Cycling Tour de la Vanoise is open to any person, man or woman of legal age, i.e. over 18 years of age at the start of the event.
2.d TOTAL AUTONOMY
The principle of total autonomy is the rule.
Total autonomy is defined as the ability to be self-sufficient throughout the race, in terms of food (solid and liquid), clothing and safety equipment, allowing for adaptation to any problems encountered or foreseeable (bad weather, physical or mental problems, injuries, etc.), as well as in terms of bivouac, geographical orientation and possible repairs to the bike.
Total autonomy means that the following compulsory rules must be respected:
- The participant must carry with him throughout the event all his compulsory equipment (see EQUIPMENT paragraph). He must carry this equipment, checked at the start of the race, in his panniers and not exchangeable during the event.
- The organiser may check the panniers and their contents at any time. The participant must then submit to these checks, on pain of exclusion from the event.
- No outside assistance is permitted at any time during the course, on pain of exclusion from the event.
- It is forbidden to be accompanied or to accept to be accompanied during all or part of the race by a non-participant.
- Drafting (taking advantage of the suction of a runner or any motorised vehicle) is prohibited for participants competing solo.
- Any person suspected of drafting another rider and vice versa will cause the disqualification of both riders.
- Drafting is nevertheless tolerated for riders competing in pairs, in the “duo” category. Any group of more than two people, at any time during the event, will be excluded from the race.
- The participant will buy food (solid and liquid) and possibly equipment from the shops available on the course.
- The participant will sleep either in a hotel, in a local house or in a bivouac, respecting – in the latter case – the local rules.
3. Registration
3.1 REGISTRATION CONDITIONS
The registration will be considered complete, and will therefore be validated, as soon as it includes the following elements
- The medical certificate dated less than one year ago mentioning the “non contraindication to the practice of cycling in competition over a distance of 400 or 700 km depending on the desired course.
- Acceptance of these rules implies acceptance of the extreme risks of the event as indicated in these rules.
- Payment of registration fees
Any competitor not in possession of these documents will not be allowed to take part in the event.
3.2 CANCELLATION / TRANSFER OF REGISTRATION
Any cancellation, whatever the reason, and even in case of force majeure, will not be reimbursed, given the difficulty of organising such an event. However, in the event of a pandemic or cancellation for external reasons, registrations will be automatically carried over to the next edition.
3.3 CANCELLATION OR MODIFICATION OF THE RACE
The organiser reserves the right to cancel the race or to change the start date of the race no later than fifteen days before the planned start date.
The participant accepts without reservation and irrevocably this right of cancellation or modification of the date of the race, so that his registration has been taken in full knowledge of the facts.
The participant waives the right to hold the organiser liable in the event of cancellation of the event or modification of its date or to demand payment of any compensation in this respect.
In the event of force majeure (in particular bad weather conditions, safety problems, etc.), the organiser reserves the right to stop the event in progress or to modify the course.
In the event of a change in the date of the race, in particular for weather reasons, the registration fee will not be refunded to the participant if he/she decides not to take part in the race for which he/she was registered, but may be carried over to the next edition.
The organiser reserves the right to change the race route and checkpoint locations at any time.
4. Equipment
To participate in the Ultra Cycling Tour de la Vanoise, a compulsory equipment kit is required.
It is important to note that this is only a vital minimum that each participant must complete according to his own capacities. It is particularly important not to choose the lightest equipment to save a few grams, but to choose equipment that will really ensure the best safety against the elements of the road and nature.
Compulsory equipment (which will be checked on the day of the race briefing) :
- GPS tracker (provided by the organiser)
- Helmet
- 1 pair of gloves
- 1 jacket or jersey with light rain resistance, ideally with hood, to withstand bad weather in the mountains
- 1 warm protection (e.g. cuff and leggings)
- Cycling clothing with high visibility reflective tape OR a reflective waistcoat.
- Bike light at the front of the bike (allow for a long range)
- Rear light in working order. (Allow for adequate battery life)
- Bike pump
- 1 inner tube repair kit (patch + glue + tyre lever)
- 1 inner tube
- Mobile phone + charging cord + charging device (dynamo or external battery)
- 1 survival blanket.
- 2 water bottles.

Equipment strongly recommended:
- 3M reflective tape in 2 positions at the front AND 2 positions at the back of the bike.
- 1 rear view mirror fixed on the rider’s helmet or the handlebars of his bike.
- Bivouac equipment (sleeping bag or tent).
- Multi-function tools such as a
- Swiss Army knife.
- Means of payment.
- 1 pair of brake pads (for mechanical braking) or 1 pair of brake pads (for disc braking)
- 1 autonomous energy production system (dynamo or solar panel type)
- First aid kit recommended
5. Bib
Each participant will be given an individual number on presentation of :
- Photo ID,
- The compulsory equipment.
The number must be visible at all times during the entire race. The name and logo of the organiser’s partners must not be hidden or modified.
6. Security
The Ultra Cycling Tour de la Vanoise is above all an adventure and secondarily a race. The organiser reminds the participants of the dangers of cycling on open roads in the presence of vehicles and wild animals.
Mutual aid between participants is not allowed (food, repairs) except for pairs. It is the responsibility of each participant to provide assistance or help to any person in danger or injured and to notify the emergency services if necessary.
The participant must be aware that in the event of any medical assistance, the nearest hospital or rescue service may take hours to reach and that helicopter evacuation may not be possible.
7. Time limits
The Ultra Cycling Tour de la Vanoise is an endurance event that takes place in a limited time, the time limit for the 400 km will be (2 days) 48h00 and for the 750 km (2 days and a half) 60 hours maximum.
8. Drop out
If the participant’s GPS tracker does not indicate any significant movement (more than 50 km) for 12 hours, the participant will be considered to have abandoned the race and will be disqualified.
In case of withdrawal, the participant will have to inform the organiser by any means by WhatsApp or SMS message to +33 (0)6 63 54 31 51 and return the loaned equipment (GPS tracker), at the participant’s expense, either to the organiser’s address at the race venue allowing him/her to receive the loaned equipment, or to the organiser’s address after this date (Florian Hudry Cycling Project, Lot le renardeau, St Marcel 73440 LES BELLEVILLE, FRANCE).
In all cases, the participant will have to sign a contract, before the start of the race, in order to obtain his GPS Tracker. The contract will commit the participant to reimburse the race organizer in case of loss or damage of the GPS tracker, or if he/she is not able to return the GPS tracker with the 10th of July 2022, for an amount of 200 euros.
The participant will be responsible for his or her own means of leaving the race and returning to his or her home or any other place he or she wishes.
The participant, having accepted the extreme risks of the event as set out in article 2b of these rules, expressly and irrevocably releases the organiser from all responsibility and assistance relating to his/her evacuation and/or repatriation to any place.
It is therefore strongly recommended that the participant anticipates a possible withdrawal in order to organise his/her evacuation/repatriation.
In the event of injury during the event, the assistance of an external helper, in addition to that of another participant, such as a doctor, first-aider, fireman, ambulance, hospital (etc.) is possible and recommended.
In case of injury during the event, the costs resulting from the use of rescue or evacuation means, even if exceptional, will be borne by the rescued participant who must also ensure his own return to the place where he was evacuated. This applies even if the participant asks the organiser to call for help.
The participant must therefore have taken out insurance to cover any type of damage linked to the event, as stated in article 10 below: INSURANCE.
The participant will be able to use his GPS tracker with an SOS device indicating that he needs emergency assistance.
Any abuse, including a false alarm, will be the full responsibility of the participant.
The organiser reserves the right to withdraw a participant from the race if he/she shows signs of advanced fatigue or excessive injury. The participant accepts without reservation this possibility of being excluded from the race.
However, this does not mean that the organiser has any role in monitoring the participant’s health or physical and mental capacities.
9. Penalization / Disqualification
The organiser may, during the event, check compliance with these regulations and carry out any checks and immediately apply the following penalties at his discretion
- Littering: appreciated by the organiser

The participant must also be in possession of civil liability insurance for the duration of the event, guaranteeing any damage that the participant may cause to others in France (and in Europe for the 750 course).
The participant is fully aware that he/she has accepted all the risks associated with the event as indicated in article 2b above, so that by entering this event, he/she releases the organiser from all responsibility for any damage he/she may suffer as a result of this event.
11. Course
The course of the Ultra Cycling Tour de la Vanoise consists of linking one or more checkpoints from the starting point to the finishing point, according to the compulsory route provided by the organiser.
The location of the checkpoints will be communicated at the latest 15 days before the race.
Each runner must pass through these points or be disqualified. In the event of a dispute or malfunction of the tracker, all material evidence (e.g. receipt) and immaterial evidence (photos, videos) will be studied by the organisation to validate or not the disqualification.
Each checkpoint has an opening window which will be communicated to you at the latest 15 days before the event. Participants who do not reach the checkpoints in time will not be entitled to any of the above-mentioned benefits upon arrival at the checkpoints.
The locations of the checkpoints can be changed by the organiser up to 15 days before the start of the event.
12. Rankings
Only participants arriving in Val Thorens (finish line of the race) will be ranked.
A general classification will be established with :
- a men’s “solo” classification
- a “solo” women’s ranking
- a “duo” classification
If one of the riders in a pair drops out, the rider reaching the finish line will be classified as “out of category”, outside the general classification.
If the participant does not follow the compulsory route provided by the organiser, he will not be classified.
A participant with one or more individual sponsors is authorised to take part in the event and may display the logos and names of his sponsor(s) on the clothing and equipment used during the event.
The organiser is the owner of the exploitation rights of the event that it organises under the legally registered Ultra Cycling Tour de la Vanoise brand.

Any commercial use of the name and/or images of the event may only be made on the basis of a written contract with the organiser.
The participant grants the organiser the right to exploit directly or in derivative form throughout the world – for the advertising, promotion and sale of the equipment which is the subject of this contract, as well as for any advertising or promotional campaign in favour of the organiser or its brands/patents – his or her name, first name, nickname, image, silhouette and voice, and this on any medium and by any means of communication known or unknown to date and for all the duration of the protection currently granted to these direct or derived exploitations by the legislative or regulatory provisions, the judicial or arbitration decisions of any country as well as by the current or future international conventions, including for the possible extensions which could be brought to this duration, in particular posters, publications or articles of press, television, radio, Internet, UMTS, CD-rom, video games, clothing, packaging.
Duos can be mixed male and female and must remain together throughout the course.
